Information and Inspiration

Organizational Programs - Training programs for profit and nonprofit organizations improve teamwork and group effectiveness. Presented in a seminar or workshop format, training is strongly interactive with an emphasis on shifting personal and organizational communication habits, also shifting decision-making based on an interactive sensibility.

College & School Programs - College and university programs scale from seminars to workshops to full courses on communication theory and practice. High schools may offer class sessions and assembly programs on relevant topics. Please inquire about alternative format options, such as team teaching, or perhaps guided field trips and excursions.

Public Programs - Sponsoring local organizations offering public programs can earn the lion's share of the revenues (e.g., fundraisers for nonprofits). As sponsor, you will receive my support for your marketing plans, plus imprint templates, plus in-site training for paid or volunteer staff producing the event.

Seminars - Presentations and group discussions. Seminar programs scale from small to large groups, and can be presented as half-day or evening sessions. The shortest effective seminar is 90 minutes, since any less becomes more like a public speaking presentation without time for group interaction.

Workshops - Experiential interactions among participants backed by presentations and group discussions. Workshops best for small groups, 10-30 participants. Can be scaled for large groups if sponsor provides suitable volunteer staff, to be trained in a special advance workshop. Programs vary from one day retreats to weekend workshops.

Classes - Presentations, group discussions and exercises. Courses can scale from small to large groups. Classes usually presented with four to six sessions of 90-minutes each, but complete courses with curricula for academic quarters or semesters can be developed.

Global Sense
. . . Tom Paine in Common Sense presented arguments to convince Americans to wage a war for national independence. Today his thinking can persuade people in any land to wage peaceful public education campaigns to generate awareness of our global interdependence. Real democracy could thrive in open markets IF people would learn to be free responsibly. Applying Paine's logic to these modern times that try our souls, we discover new ways of thinking about war and peace and self government in the 21st Century.
. . . A global sense of our innate interactivity with the world inspires us to accept our power and duty to practice responsible self rule within ourselves and personal democracy within the world. Respecting the rights and efforts of others to rule themselves uplifts all of us.
. . . Research on the effects of interactive communication shows a sense of our interactivity alters our communication habits. As a natural adaptation to living in an interconnected global society, we grow alert to the consequences of our choices. In seeing the price of narcissism, we learn to balance freedom and responsibility in our daily choices, large and small, which in time transforms our homes, schools, jobs, communities, nations, and world. Changing our world by changing ourselves, we feel a reasonable hope of success for incrementally helping enough people on the planet to mature enough for genuine democracy to work.

Global Sense programs allow the participants to experience the power of our interactivity (especially in the workshop), to discover how interacting more responsibly liberates the self for personal growth, empowering us to express inner leadership in our lives. Because the premise of global interactivity applies to thinking about choices in any setting, I offer customized programs for the public, for schools and for organizations.

Deep Literacy
. . . Literacy evolves with our communication technologies. Reading, writing and arithmetic matter more now than ever, yet a person also now needs mechanical, computer, media, and cultural literacy, plus other literacies. But these are not enough in the new interactive age.
. . . To handle the future shock of shifting into a globally interdependent world, we need to expand the meaning of literacy to include seeing the nature and power of our dynamic global interactivity. We need to understand what our interactive power means to us personally and professionally and politically. We shape our homes, schools, jobs, communities, nations and world by all the little ways we communicate daily.
. . . If the new measure of functional literacy includes the knowledge we're all interactive, that our interactions have consequences affecting us and others, that what I do to you I do to me, will the resulting self restraint improve our world? If deeper literacy is naturalized into our diverse cultures, so the old eternal truths are hooked up with the new realities, would individuals mature enough for self fulfillment to be more than a dream? Could humanity mature enough for open democracy finally to have a fair shot at success on our world?
. . . Deep Literacy programs allow the participants to explore skills and competencies leading toward deep literacy (especially in the experiential workshop and class), discovering for themselves how interacting responsibly empowers self liberation and inner leadership.

Interactive Management
. . . Organizations increasingly are now interlaced by interactive networks that alter routine communication patterns in these organizations. The distributed architecture of interactive networks is reflected in distributed systems of organizational decision-making. If the workgroup is interlinked like a flat lattice, why train managers in climbing ladders?
. . . Researchers have known the power of interactive or "participatory" management since the Hawthorn Studies in the 1930s proved the productivity benefits of people feeling a sense of ownership for creating the policies and practices for their jobs. Interactive management advances the old insights to the next level with wisdom from modern communication theory. Communication is the central process of organizations.
. . . Smart organizations go beyond lip-service for "teamwork." Interactive leaders realize hierarchical thinking is not compatible with networked systems, so change their leadership styles accordingly. Interactive managers know the nature of interactivity gives organization members the power, the right and the duty to improve the effectiveness and productivity of their group, which permits fresh ways of thinking about profitability and self fulfillment.

Writing Courses
. . Writing well requires both learned craft and inborn talent. The writing courses offered can allow you to learn the rules and the ropes of creative and freelance writing. My writing programs are designed for experienced and dedicated writers ready to reach another level personally and professionally, yet starting writers with ability and desire and due diligence are welcome to enroll. Programs for beginning writers are available on request.
. . . Writing classes last four to six weeks, as a rule. Shorter seminars and workshops, along with complete courses for academic quarters or semesters, are available on request.
. . . All writing classes are conducted in Denver unless otherwise arranged.
.. . Professional Freelance Writing - Editors are besieged by wannabe writers without any inkling of how a pro behaves in the literary marketplace. I cannot teach you how to write, but I can teach you how to market yourself and conduct yourself as a professional freelance writer. After a thousand articles and essays published since 1976, local to global, I view freelancing as a craft and a business, with real property rights at stake for writers and publishers while our cultures and societies hang in the balance.

My freelance writing course covers the tools of the trade (professional and personal), finding stories editors will buy (writing for self, writing for markets), basic journalism research, the query, the manuscript, writing on spec, writing on assignment, kill fees, copyright law, accounting and taxes, building editorial relationships (stable stringers), and ideas for further professional development. Classes are fun but designed for those serious about their dream of freelancing for a living.

Writing Courses
. . . . Writing from Within -I cannot teach you how to write, no one can, but I can help you teach yourself. Inspired by my studies in the writing department at Columbia College of Chicago, I developed my creative writing course in 1981 at Denver Free University to help myself and other writers find our natural authentic voice. I've adapting or invented diverse exercises designed to help us writers find and express our inner power.
. . . I do the exercises with the group. My role is both teacher and student. I'm pushing the envelope in my own work to make the lessons worthwhile for me, which can make for some adventures of the imagination. The class has a fiction emphasis, since that's my first love, but poets and essayists are welcome. Improving our writing together is the goal.
. . No creative writing class is scheduled at this time. I'm thinking about a one-day intensive sometime this summer as a kickstarter experiment, perhaps in August?

TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS:

My education features undergraduate studies of writing, speech and theater at Adams State College of Colorado, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and Columbia College of Chicago. I hold a dual 1988 BA in journalism and communication from the University Without Walls at Loretto Heights College, followed by researching classical and modern communication theory in the individualized MA program at Antioch University. Graduate studies included organizational training and development (communication perspective) with an emphasis on participatory management and teams.

I've also trained since the Eighties as a personal growth and intrapersonal communication facilitator and coach, including extensive studies through Motivation Management Service plus advanced certifications in diverse techniques. A lifelong learner, I live and grow as I goes along.

Learning by teaching, I've taught adult education classes since 1977, primarily creative writing and freelancing writing. I developed the "Writing From Within" course in 1981 at Denver Free University, where I taught for eight years until the closure of this widely emulated noncredit adult education institution. I've also taught freshman English, composition, business writing, and public speaking at Denver-area trade colleges and private secondary schools.
